Mary Did You Know – Tracey Quillen’s Message
From Tracey Quillen: In the Gospel of Luke, we meet the Angel Gabriel, a messenger from God who has come to the high priest Zechariah to bestow a blessing on him and his wife. This baby boy will be called John and we later learn that John has been called to prepare the way for Jesus. Zechariah, the high priest, is in the Temple when he is approached by Gabriel. but was filled with fear and trembled before God’s Angel, Gabriel. In his humanness, Zechariah is incredulous about the news that his “wife advanced in years” will have a baby and says so to the Angel. The Angel smites his tongue and the old priest is no longer able to speak until after the birth of his son as was predicted by the messenger of God. It is said that he who cannot speak well must learn to listen.
This story is a prelude to the same angel who visits a young woman named Mary. Mary is betrothed, as is customary in the Jewish tradition, to a man named Joseph but as of yet, they are not married and it is presumed that they have not “known” each other as husband and wife. The Angel Gabriel appears to Mary with a greeting, “Hail. O favored one, the Lord is with you.” Unlike the high priest, Mary is not afraid but rather, perplexed and ponders the meaning of the messenger from God. She is silent, open hearted, awaiting the meaning of his message. She listens to what Gabriel has to say and she takes deep inside this news that she is to carry the Christ Child, the Holy One, the Son of God, the one of Infinite Possibilities. She listens to her Inner Guidance, her Intuitive Nature, and responds in praise to God the Glory and assents to this request. She commits in her fullness, in her knowing of who she is, to carry this Divine Idea, to nurture it, and birth it, and to support it for the rest of her life. Mary’s gift to us is (1) listening in the Silence with an open heart, (2) hearing her Guidance and acting upon it, and (3) making an unwavering Commitment, to do what is hers to do even when her ways may not appear to be the ways of those around her.
