St. Pete Pride Parade
by Hazel Voss
What is community if each member does not feel a sense of purpose in what they have to contribute to our shared Oneness? The affirmation “I am Oneness” has been both the most elevating and the most weighted mantra I have ever tried and continue to attempt to embody. It encompasses everything I know to be good in me, as well as all that is within my shadow Self. It also calls me to objectively see that light in others whose lives and cultures I know nothing about.
Feeling humbled, I knew it was time to take a joy-filled risk. I asked our members to join me, in solidarity, to show our active support at the St. Petersburg, Florida Pride Parade. Although we may be in a battleground state politically, the call was met with a resounding YES. As donations poured in and the volunteer sheet filled up, we secured a water sponsorship from the third-largest beverage company in the world. Our collective momentum brought excitement, stirred spirits, and sparked hope to be more in our efforts as we practiced what we were preaching.
We created over 600 affirmation cards, featuring the 12 Powers, secured over 100 gallons of fresh purified water, prepared 1,200 paper cups, and prepared hundreds of fans, stickers, and pins to freely pass out. We provided water to local law enforcement, medical teams treating victims of heat stroke, and those who could not even afford water, but wanted to be there because of what it meant to be proud to exist authentically. We were a source of hope for those who had lost faith or been turned away by members of their own religion simply for who they are and who they love.
Unity of Palm Harbor heard the calling and met it fearlessly, with radical compassion. The world is ready to see people, like us, whose cups overflow with prosperity and abundance, pouring out freely and without judgment. To be told by the event staff, after we had fully packed up and the sun had set, that we were the “Unsung Heroes” at Pride meant our presence was truly felt by those we encountered. In a spiritual movement like ours, when we take action together, especially in times of great need for our Christ-like nature, we have an immense ability to make a strong impact that outshines any fear-based beliefs, especially the actions we take when no one seems to be watching.
Do you hear the calling? We do!
