Unity is a practical, progressive approach to a spiritual based life. Using the teachings of Jesus and the power of positive prayer, you can change your circumstances. Unity recognizes the universal truths in all religious traditions and respects your individual right to follow the spiritual path of your choice. We consider ourselves Christian-based; following the teachings of Christ. We are not the same as the Unitarian Universalist, a different religion who claim no specific religious identity.
God is Creator of everything and the Source of all. As Spirit, God surrounds, supports and indwells you. Unity defines God in various ways, such as Life, Love, Light, Principle, Law, Universal Mind, and Substance. God, as Divine Energy is constantly creating and then expresses through and as that creation. You are part of that creative process, and therefore part of God, and you can never be apart from God. Traditional religions usually refer to God as the masculine aspect. In Unity, God is often referred to as Mother-Father God, combining the feminine and masculine energies of Creator, but not as a person.
The Nature of Humankind
You are an individual, eternal expression of God. Your natural essence is divine and therefore inherently good. Your purpose is to express your divine potential as demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more you become aware of your divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through your life.
God is Spirit, the loving source of all that is. God is the one power, all good, everywhere present, all wisdom. God is divine energy, continually creating, expressing and sustaining all creation. In God, we live and move and have our being. In Unity, some other ways we speak of God are Life, Light, Love, Substance, Principle, Law and Universal Mind.
The Nature of Humankind
We are each individual, eternal expressions of God. Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through our lives.
- Heaven is not a place you go, but is a state of mind. You create your own heaven and hell here and now by what you think and how you act.
- You were born with a capacity to know God through the direct experiences of nature, loving and being loved, and living an abundant, healthy life.
- The “Christ” is that part of God that is in you. There is a spark of divinity within all people, just as there was in Jesus.
- Prayer works. Positive prayer works on your ideas, lifting up your spirit.
- You are here to set a positive example and be a role model for others.
- You are here to make the world a better place, and you do by your presence.
We believe that Jesus more perfectly expressed his divine potential and is our role-model teaching us how to express our divine potential as well. Jesus is considered a master teacher of universal truths and has shown us the way to express those truths. The term Christ means the divine nature in human form. Jesus is the great example of the Christ expressing. Jesus said you can do what he did and more, which tells you how are capable you are of also being a good example of spiritual living.
Unity founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore studied the Bible as history and allegory and interpreted it as a metaphysical representation of our journey to become aware of our spiritual nature. In addition, Unity recognizes that the Bible is a complex collection of writings compiled over many centuries. We honor the writings as reflecting the understanding and inspiration of the writers at the time they were written. We find in them, the value of literature. The Bible continues to be a valuable spiritual resource for us.
Prayer and Meditation
Our form of prayer is constructive, creative and life-affirming. It is not a pleading or begging communication with God, but rather communion and acceptance of the promise that the Kingdom of Heaven is ours. This creative process allows us to release any negative thoughts and ideas, replacing them with statements that affirm our divine connection to our Creator.
Meditation is our practice of experiencing the presence of God and can take many forms, including walks in nature, being aware of the moment, being of service to others.
Prayer and meditation heighten our awareness and thereby transform our lives.
Honoring Diversity Within the Unity Movement
We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people within the Unity family in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We strive to reach out to all who seek Unity support and spiritual growth through our ministries, publications and programs. It is imperative to us that our ministries and outreach be free of discrimination toward of race, color, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability or sexual orientation. Our sincere desire is to ensure that all Unity organizations support diversity and are free from discrimination.
In our effort to reach out to all people as did our Wayshower, Jesus Christ, we support the modification of our facilities to make them accessible to all people, regardless of physical challenges; the translation of our materials into braille and other languages; and respect for the wonderful variety of human commitments and relationships.
We encourage ministers, teachers and others within Unity to honor the strength of diversity within their spiritual communities. It is with love and in celebration of our unity, in the midst of our wondrous diversity, that we affirm this position.

5 Basic Unity Principles
We encourage you to explore and apply Unity teachings based on your own spiritual understanding. We believe this spiritual understanding is enhanced through positive prayer and meditation. The five basic ideas that make up the Unity belief system are:
- God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.
- We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
- We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
- There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our awareness of God.
- Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.
